Pyrkon 2025

Pyrkon 2025 Came and Went

A bit earlier than expected this year, as Friday the 13th hit hard from the very start and completely derailed all my original plans. So, in the end, my Pyrkon experience was limited to just one day.

I was scheduled to start my demo at 16:30, but since I arrived early - around 14:00  - I set up my stuff and decided to begin ahead of schedule.

For the first 15 minutes, not much happened. But once things picked up, the amount of interest totally exceeded my expectations. And I mean really exceeded them. Over the span of more than six hours, I ran three full demo games (as a referee) with complete introductions to the rules, plus one shorter showcase game and answered so much questions I won't even try to estimate.

The number of people curious about FSD and/or my diorama was genuinely impressive. At one point, I had to take a break just to grab something to eat, but even then people were lining up to play or chat!

In a bit of unexpected magic, while I was asking people to wait a moment so I could go explore a bit, I randomly bumped into two friends. One proudly told me that Playmaty released a new mat using his design for Epic/Legions Imperialis!

The other brought his own prototype game to Pyrkon, which I had the brief chance to try out!

But since I wondered off from my table for over 20 minutes people started to pile up and I had to come back to answer questions. A huge thanks to Ryo for keeping people occupied while I took a short maintenance break (doing this as a solo operation has it's drawbacks)!

Later that night, after all the demos were done (21-22?), I squeezed in a quick skirmish of Black Ops by Osprey. The system sounded intriguing based on the game master’s description (shoutout to the Hiena), but from the short demo, it was hard to get a real feel for the game. Still, fun time!

Some late night Heavy Gear gaming going on on a table next to our Black Ops.

All in all, it was a short but successful trip. I had virtually no time for anything outside of demos (which also meant I saved money by not buying random stuff - bonus!).

Will I do it again next year? No idea :)
Will all that interest turn into actual new players? We’ll see!

Did I catch a nice photo in a 40k phot booth, of course!
